  1. Adopt a long-term perspective – 3-5 years out
  2. Establish full board and executive involvement
  3. Ensure structured development and ongoing dialogue with annual review
  4. Integrate succession planning with talent management
  5. Understand and agree on selection criteria
  6. Utilise a formal assessment for the CEO and all critical positions
  7. Work with and develop internal candidates before looking externally
